Department of Biotechnology, School of Biological Sciences, St. Joseph’s College has organized the State Level Intercollegiate Technical Fest.
The Department of Biotechnology, School of Biological Sciences, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli, has organized the State Level Intercollegiate Technical Fest “BIO-DE FIESTA” on 17th September 2025 at Jubilee Hall. The fest witnessed an impressive participation of around 700 students from 35 colleges across Tamil Nadu.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Rev. Dr. M. Arockiasamy Xavier SJ, Secretary of the College, who in his address emphasized the role of science and innovation in shaping a sustainable future and encouraged students to use their knowledge for the betterment of society. The Presidential Address was delivered by Rev. Dr. S. Mariadoss SJ, Principal, who highlighted the importance of academic excellence blended with values and urged the students to engage in research with social responsibility. The Inaugural Address was given by Dr. C. Aiyavu, Associate Professor, Thanthai Periyar Government Arts & Science College, Tiruchirappalli, who stressed that biotechnology has vast potential in the curing of diseases, solving global challenges and motivated students to enhance their skills through active participation. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. V. Swabna, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Biotechnology.
The technical fest featured 13 events including Quiz, Collage, Cartooning, Hand Painting, and other competitions that brought out the creativity, scientific aptitude, and technical skills of the participants.
The Valedictory Ceremony was held in the evening. Rev. Dr. Pavulraj Michael SJ, Rector, St. Joseph’s College, in his valedictory address, appreciated the enthusiasm of the participants and reminded them that competitions are not just about winning but about learning and teamwork.
A significant highlight of the event was the book release by the department staff members titled “Ayurgenomics and Beyond: Biotechnology through the Indian Lens”, which offers an insightful perspective on integrating traditional Indian knowledge systems with modern biotechnology. Additionally, the department proudly released two chloroplast genomes of medicinal plants and one bacterial genome, which were published in NCBI (USA), marking a remarkable academic and research achievements. This milestone not only reflects the research strength of the department but also places the institution on the global scientific map, inspiring students to actively engage in cutting-edge research and innovation. Dr. A. Edward, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, proposed the vote of thanks.

The Overall Championship was won by the Department of Biotechnology, Bon Secours College for Women, Thanjavur. The First Runner-up position was secured by the Department of Biotechnology, Holy Cross College, Tiruchirappalli, while the Second Runner-up was bagged by the Department of Biotechnology, The American College, Madurai.
The fest concluded on a high note, with students cherishing a day of knowledge-sharing, creativity, and competitive spirit, making the event a memorable success.
