Arrupe Library of St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli organized the “Read – Reflect – Review: Newspaper Review Competition” on 24 February 2026.

The programme consisted of both the inaugural and valedictory functions.
The inaugural function began with a welcome address by Dr. X. Mercy Angeline, Librarian and Organizing Secretary. Rev. Dr. M. Arockiasamy Xavier SJ, Secretary, felicitated the gathering. Dr. Cheryl Antoinette Dumenil, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Holy Cross College, Trichy, served as the Chief Guest for the

inaugural function. She spoke on the importance of reading and the role of newspapers in enhancing knowledge and critical thinking. She also interacted with the students and answered their questions. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Arockiam SJ, Library Director, proposed the vote of thanks.

A total of 91 students registered for the competition, out of which 67 students actively participated. The competition commenced at 10.30 a.m. Students were provided with The Hindu (English) and The Hindu (Tamil) newspapers according to their preferences. As per the instructions given, participants read the newspapers. Four judges evaluated the students’ oral reviews, and the evaluated.

Mr. U. Farooq, Deputy Collector, Trichy, was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function. Rev. Dr. Pavulraj Michael SJ, Rector, felicitated the gathering.
In the chief guest address, Mr. Farooq shared his personal journey of success and emphasized the principles of COD – Consistency, Optimism, and Discipline. He motivated students to develop disciplined reading habits and mentioned that he had utilized the Kannimara Public Library for his preparation.
Dr. X. Mercy Angeline announced the winners in both Tamil and English categories. Mr. U. Farooq distributed the prizes to the winners and runners-up. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Arockiam SJ.
