St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchirappalli, an autonomous institution, recently organized an inaugural function for effective learning in English at Holy Redeemer Girls Higher Secondary School in Palakkarai, Trichy. The event was part of the college’s Extension Department SHEPHERD’s outreach program.

– *Chief Guest*: Rev. Fr. Sahayaraj SJ, Director of Extension Department SHEPHERD, highlighted the importance of this effort for 2nd-year MA English Shift II students, emphasizing its significance in outcome-based outreach and sustainable development in education.
– *School Participation*: Rev. Sis. Arokiamary, Headmistress of the Higher Secondary School, and Rev. Sis. Gracy Vanaja, Headmistress of the Primary School, participated and arranged the program locally, expressing gratitude for selecting their school.
– *Student Background*: The school’s students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with parents working as daily wage earners in the Gandhi Market area.

This event reflects St Joseph’s College’s commitment to community service and education, aligning with its mission to provide quality education and promote sustainable development. The college has a history of providing scholarships and financial support to students based on their academic performance and financial need.¹

These effective coaching classes are designed to enhance the language skills of underprivileged students. Students Ms. J. Flaria and Ms. S. Shalini presented and explained the syllabus and methodology, focusing on simple and easy-to-understand approaches to primary and high-school level grammar. They suggested exercises, key notes, and practice sessions to help students grasp the concepts.

In his inaugural address, Mr. S. Lenin, Senior Coordinator, noted that many children struggle with science, mathematics, and English language skills. However, the MA English students’ approachable and easy-to-follow teaching methods can help improve students’ language skills.

The entire program was organized by 2nd-year MA English Shift II students in collaboration with Holy Redeemer school management, teachers, and staff. A total of 21 MA English Shift II students and 15 teachers participated and planned the program meticulously. The coaching classes will consist of intensive three-week sessions, followed by an evaluation of the students’ progress. The outcome is expected to significantly enhance the students’ English language skills.
